Russian Documentaries on the Hudson

The Fourth Russian Documentary Film Festival closes

Over the course of three days, from September 30th until October 2nd, over 2000 viewers came to see the best 18 Russian documentaries of the last year. Most of the films shown were award winners from Russian and international film festivals in 2010, including films by such directors as Sergey Miroshnichenko and Marina Razbezhkina, whose latest film "The Weather outside is Beautiful" premiered on the festival's opening night.

Films of different styles and genres, schools and aesthetics were shown at Tribeca Cinemas, as well as two additional platforms that were provided by the partners of the festival's organizer "The New Review" -- these were the Russian Cultural Center in NY State ("Otrada", in Spring Valley), and Shortfront (Brooklyn).

The festival closing ceremony was held at one of the oldest private clubs in Manhattan – The Soldiers', Sailors', Marines' Club, (est. 1919), Prior to the award ceremony, the audience watched Sergey Kokovkin's film about writer Sergey Dovlatov "The Enthusiast's Demarche", and was able to meet Dovlatov's friends and colleagues who had participated in the film. The film won the "Audience award" at the festival.

The festival's Grand-Prix was awarded to the film "The Swamp" (dir. Irina Vasilyeva), a patriotic satire. "Special Jury Prize" was awarded to M. Razbezhkina's film "The Weather outside is Beautiful" - a film about writer, artist and singer Lyudmila Petrushevskaya.

The festival program included a number of films on the topic of ecology, such as Daniel Levin's "Kamchatka" and Sergey Miroshnichenko's "The River of Life". A new project by american ecologists and filmmakers about lake Baikal - "Baikal: The Blue Pearl of Siberia in IMAX/3D" was also introduced at the festival.

Special festival diplomas were also given to the films "The Merry Soldier", "Lemnos - the Russian Golgotha", as well as directors Dmitry Khavin and Yelena Yakovich.
